one year ago my friend, confidant, and fellow photographer returned from an experience called field trip and told me in no uncertain terms that the following year, i was to return with her.

last month i met a rowdy group of nebraskans in the los angeles airport and hopped in a mini van that sped off along the california coast to shake up my life. i think i’m simultaneously a rather dramatic person, but a person who is maybe hard to surprise. or at least i don’t like to show it… even if something hits me in the moment, it often takes some time to sink in and register. but field trip was like coming home to the summer camp i never attended, and it continues to leave me with revelations and thoughts and to-do lists in the form of little brain-explosions. pew pew.

my brain likes to retain experiences in flashes and snippets and in-betweens. sunset on a windblown mane of long blonde hair. mountains of bras and makeup, shoes and half open suitcases lining a cabin floor. the bite of the pacific in february at 7 am. maybe that’s why i’m a photographer. that’s how my brain works.
//
at the end of the day, i almost don’t care about the classes and the official learning aspect of field trip. i still can’t believe how fantastically nice everyone was. how willing to make conversation, and honestly; to be more interested in connecting with other humans than looking at their phones. and we are a profession ruled by electronic life. yet i now have friends in cleveland, england and australia that i feel like i’m ready to hop on a plane and go visit. thank you, field trip. for fostering such a flourishing of relationships and bringing together so many people who love weird hair, bare feet, tons of tattoos, loud dance parties and trying something different.
