my two favorite things to shoot are moody selfie sessions, and couples sessions just because. for me, these are the most timeless and the most meaningful because you’re there to make the pictures because you want to… not to reflect a specific occasion where you feel pressured to book the photos…
this oh-so-fun and lovely portrait session started in their home. I love shooting in home; whether we end up using the entire house, just one room, or just one corner of one room… it’s the chance to relfect your utmost personality and style; it’s where you spend the majority of your time; and probably where you will be the most comfortable.
can we talk about these windows, these plants, this light!?
this session we kept it simple. no outfit changes, no major prop uses… just a quick trip to downtown MHK for cocktails at Arrow Lounge, and then outside for sunset.
if you follow my work you probably recognize that I’ve photographed this couple several times. I just love their classic and effortless vibe, but mostly I love the fact that they never need a special occasion to get photos done. They do it becuase they love having updated photos and printing them for their home… having professional portrait sessions is certainly an investment, and it can take some mental energy to schedule and to find the right outfits etc., but something I often tell people is– it is also a relationship that is refined with your photographer over time. The more often you create the opportunity, the better the results will be, and the more comfortable you will become in front of the camera. If you booked one session one time with a photographer and ended up disappointed, don’t despair! I really encourage you to try again- there are hundreds of photographers trying to grow their networks and practice their skills who offer free or deeply discounted sessions often… and if there is a specific photographer you love, it never hurts to reach out and ask what their level of interest is on shorter sessions; if they ever offer specials; or if they would consider setting up a “series” of sessions at consistent intervals and lesser costs than traditional full sessions… (spoiler alert, I would LOVE if someone came to me with this). we photographers are plenty vain, if you’re seeking us out because you love our vibe, there’s a good chance we’ll find a way to work with you 😉
do you have “go to” outfits, poses, or tricks when you have your photos done? if you’re holding back on booking a session- what’s your biggest obstacle?
